Grey's Anatomy : The Musical Event (Song Beneath the Song) Season 7 Episode 18
77Grey's Anatomy - The Musical Event
Grey's Anatomy Musical: Viewers Outraged by Concept
Grey's Anatomy " The Musical Event" was exactly what I expected, a total disaster. It was like watching a train wreck, you know when something is that awful, yet you can't get yourself to look away. Yeah, that's exactly what happened. When Grey's Anatomy was hyping up it's upcoming musical event, I thought it was an episode that would feature songs from episodes past. That part was true, but I had no idea that it was an episode where the characters of a drama based show where going to bust out in song themselves.
I have no idea what Shonda Rhimes was thinking when she wrote this episode, but she was way off track. I could not take the episode seriously at all. I think Shonda has been watching too much Glee or something. I love Glee and usually love Grey's Anatomy, but I like the two shows to be kept separate. This episode has me wondering if the producers and creators of the show were so desperate for ratings that they thought jumping on the success of Glee would help them. Well, it looks like you have your answer and it's NO!
I am also left wondering if the creators of Grey's Anatomy were aiming for a separate Emmy category with this catastrophic idea.
The Grey's Anatomy Musical Event also reminded me of something else. It was an episode of Scrubs (which was a comedy about Doctors, not a drama) that aired in 2007, titled "My Musical". That concept worked for the show because that show was meant to be a campy comedy.
Maybe Grey's Anatomy should of consulted Henry Winkler first. He could at least told them what happens when a show tries to "Jump the shark"! (Thank you to the people who get that reference).
I am interested in seeing if Grey's Anatomy can recover from this disastrous episode, but I will not hold my breath. Personally, I don't know if I can ever take the show seriously again. What I do know is I have erased the episode off my DVR and hope it never airs again (it will, but I won't be watching it). I really feel bad for the cast because some of them are very talented. I just don't understand how they got talked into such a thing.
I imagined Katherine Heigl sitting at home watching and laughing hysterically. Thinking "Wow, I left that show just in time"! If she truly was, she is very right!
If you think I'm being too harsh about the episode I have found comments based on other viewers reactions. There was actually quite a long list of disappointed viewers, but it will take all day to put that many up.
Here is what other viewers had to say:
This episode was awful, it took away from what was really going on in the episode. Hated the music, only sing if you have actual singers. Kali's singing was alright, everyone else... not so much. It was a bad glee tryout. Don't ever do this again Greys... please its not fitting for the show. Also the songs didn't seem to fit into the episode well, and it was SO much singing. Did not like.
What was that Glee's Anatomy? And going back to the same songs with Denny, just because it worked then? Yuck. New low.
STOP
SINGING!!! THIS IS GREYS NOT GLEE!!!!!
The episode was self-indulgent CRAP. Oh, and for all of you idiot Kardashian clones, EVERYTHING is NOT "Amazing!". Ugh
I
think I just witnessed the worse episode of a TV show ever! Who the
**** thought THAT was a good idea? TOALLY CHEESY! I like Callie's
voice but they could have dreamed up a better way to let her perform
on the show. I couldn't wait for it to all end but I had to keep
watching to see if it got any better...it got worse. Everyone stops
to have sex in the middle of the saddest episode ever??? IT JUST
DIDN'T MAKE SENSE TO ME
I
laughed for an hour straight. It will be completely unnecessary for
any satire or SNL sketch to be done of this episode, since it seems
they provided the joke themselves: by attempting to take this episode
seriously. what an embarrassing episode.
Wasn't
nearly as good as the scrubs musical !
I
like grey's, but this episode was horrific. I'm a little embarrassed
for the creators of the show to be honest. It was super corny.
This
was the most forced, uncomfortable episode to date. Just awful. I
wanted to turn it off at each commercial but kept hoping it would get
better. It never did. It seemed the music was there just to be there.
For
those who thought it was amazing, I think you forgot what show you
were watching. That's just my opinion. I think it's very sad when a
show takes away from what could of been a very dramatic episode just
for ratings sake! There is a rumor that Grey's Anatomy was considering
making another musical episode. I beg you, please don't ever do it
again!

Can't wait to watch the new season Of Glee when Lea Michelle performs an emergency appendectomy on Heather Morris...ooops wrong show.. Just sayin lol
That episode was complete garbage...I allow myself but one drama a week and this is what they give me? P.S. Your right it worked for Scrubs because Scrubs was always doing silly stuff like that... I remember a show called "Cop Rock" back in the 90's and there is a reason it was taken off the air after only a few episodes and that is because a drama show doesn't mix with characters busting out into a dramatic song like a bad high school musical..I don't think I will be back for next season.....
Yeah they definitely jumped the shark!!!!!!!
Scrubs Musical: awesome.
Grey's: Not so much.
I totally agree with your view on the episode such a shame
I didn't like this episode either. It confused me and I love Grey's Anatomy. I didn't like the singing over the talking and I almost fell asleep during one song.
Cheese and rice the worst episode ever. Why the hell would these actors say ok to such a horrible script. Hope they come back. I might nor be able to ever watch!
The best idea was to have sex while your friend is just dying. Congrats!
Yes, ok, it was maybe a bit much, HOWEVER, just watching Sara Ramirez singing "the story" at the end made sitting through the rest of it worth every second!!!! Hats off to her for salvaging this episode.
I think this episode was absolutely great. THe best idea they ever head.
I've just joined hub and saw this post. I could not agree more! That was the worst episode I ever saw!! Thankfully I dvr'd it so I fast forwarded all of the singing. It was just too painful to watch and I felt embarrassed for the show.
I actually liked it. Idk why everyone is so insulting. It was just ONE singing episode. It didn't remind me of Glee, for starters I really dislike Glee. Not ny cup of tea. But you don't see me insulting the show....
While I respect your point of view, I really think you take It way to seriously - Is it really worth throwing your toys just because it didn't go your way?? And going off on Rhimes is really unneccesary, I'd like to see you trying to make a multi-million viewer hit series. . .
Peace

Great job covering this! I adore Grey's, but could not bring myself to watch this episode beyond the first 20 minutes! Here's to hoping that next week is an actual drama!
